A Jolly, Holly RFC! Fundraiser
The backroom at Teatro Goldoni was overflowing with holiday cheer and support at the “Martinis and Mistletoe” event benefiting Reach for College! on December 14. The event was the fourth annual fundraiser organized by Ezra Qassim, a local entrepreneur who coordinates unique promotional activities for local charities. Martinis and Mistletoe attracted an after work crowd that purchased raffle tickets and placed silent auction bids on sports memorabilia, while sipping on holiday-themed martinis. For Reach for College! Board of Directors member Patrick Tierney, this was the latest in a series of “happy hour fundraisers” that he has put together on our behalf. It was Patrick who connected with Ezra to ensure RFC! was positioned as the “charity of choice” for the holiday revelers.
”Martinis and Mistletoe brought together a new group of supporters with our long standing friends and partners for an evening of fun and celebration. At the same time, it was a party with a purpose that raised nearly $2000.00 in cash donations alone,” said Jonathan B. Williams, executive director of Reach for College! “That money goes directly to place postsecondary options within reach of low-income, first generation college-going youth who dream of an education beyond high school.”
Door prizes were donated by area businesses and included gift certificates to restaurants, hotels, day spas, hair salons, tickets to Washington Capitals games, and much more. Sports memorabilia receiving enthusiastic bids included:
- Signed basketball from Washington Wizards guard John Wall
- Signed helmet and photograph of former Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theisman
- Signed hockey stick from Washington Capitals’ Center Niklas Backstrom
- Signed plaque and portion of the net from Alexander Ovechkin's 65th goal of the 2007-08 Washington Capitals season
RFC! board members were among the crowd, “talking up” our organizational attributes to party goers. Ezra’s “host committee” made sure all guests felt welcomed ensuring a great year-end fundraising success for RFC!
