Shanima Parker Continues on the Road to Success
Now that she is a junior at Bennett College, Shanima knows what she learned through Reach for College! established the foundation for her college success.
“I’ve maintained a 3.0 average!” says the journalism/media studies major from Washington, DC.
In addition to keeping up with her studies, Shanima is a resident assistant at her dormitory, writes for Bennett College’s magazine Belle, is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, and volunteers at the Salvation Army sorting donations. She was named Miss DC/Maryland Association Queen in recognition for her community service activities.
Shanima also gives back to RFC! During summer vacation, she volunteers at the annual College Readiness Institute, the training event that prepares educators and program staff to promote a college going culture in their schools and programs.
“Whatever needs to be done, I help out,” Shanima says enthusiastically.
Shanima also stays in touch with other graduates of RFC! who are also navigating their way through college.
“We’ve formed a support group where we share our experiences,” says Shanima. “We realize that we were not alone in trying to do something positive and great in pursuing a college education. Reach for College! has been a blessing.”
